Ricongiungimento familiare

It is dedicated to Non Eu citizens, regularly living in Italy and holding a valid permit of stay of at least 12 months, who want their family member(s) to join them in Italy later on. Application can be made also while waiting for the permit of stay (first issue with a valid visa of 12 months duration or renewal).

Holders of a research permit are entitled to apply for family reunion regardless the duration of the permit (or the visa).

From December 2024, foreign nationals, except foreigners holding residence permits for international protection, can apply for family reunion only after completing at least two continuous years of legal residence in Italy. 
The two years of residence are not required for the accompanying family members procedure. 


Who is eligible? 

  • spouse not legally separated of at least18 years old;
  • children younger than 18;
  • dependent children over 18;
  • dependent parents of the applicant for family reunion, if the applicant is the only offspring.

According to the type of work contract you have, you can be entitled to claim family benefits such as family allowances, maternity/parental leave and tax credits.

Some of the benefits addresses to families and to depedent child/children.

Under certain conditions, specific benefits are foreseen also if family members (i.e. spouse, children) live outside Italy.

Education and schooling

In the Italian education system schooling is compulsory  up to the age of 16 and it is divided into four  stages:

  • Primary School (scuola primaria) compulsory (6 to 10 years old)
  • First Level Secondary School or Lower Secondary School (scuola secondaria di primo grado o scuola media) compulsory (11 to 14 years old)
  • High School or Upper Secondary School (scuola secondaria di secondo grado o scuola superiore) compulsory up to 16 (14 onwards)
  • University (università)

Infant School or Nursery School (scuola per l’infanzia) is not compulsory (3 to 5 years old).


How to enroll pupils  with?

Enrollment with public crèche, infant school and primary and First Level Secondary School can be done at any moment of the school year of the arrival of juniors.

The application is managed by Education and schooling office of the municipality you reside for public creche and infant school while from primary school on the application is done online. Parents may freely choose the school upon availability of vacant places. 

A monthly fee may be required for meals, school transport when provided. A discounted fees may be obtained by presenting ISEE certificate,  a document attesting personal and household condition.

School year runs in general from mid-September to mid-June. 

Trieste and Udine host international schools. In Trieste there are also schools of every level where classes are taught in Slovenian as main language.

Enrollment should be done well in advance, usually in January  for public crèche and infant school and in February for primary and First Level Secondary School.
